Copper Hospital Beds Reducing Bacteria Levels and Infectious Disease
A new copper surface on hospital beds is being offered to hospitals and
is sure to set a new standard for patient care by reducing infectious disease
outbreaks with a 80% reduction in bacteria counts in patient rooms. The
new “copper” hospital beds switch out the bed rails which are known to be
the area with the highest bacteria counts in patient rooms.

“Copper” is a material which has been known as “anti microbial” for thousands
of years dating back to early times when water pots where made with copper however
in modern times it has taken a while to get this surface into places that have high
bacteria counts. Hospital beds are one of the newest items getting new copper
surfaces put on them as hospitals try to reduce bacteria counts in hospitals and
infectious disease outbreaks. Hospital bed and hospital bed rails more specifically
have some of the highest bacteria counts in hospitals and a new “copper” bed rail
product is now being introduced to hospitals to reduce bacteria counts, “HAI’s”
and infectious disease outbreaks which according to Michael G. Schmidt, PhD, Professor
of Microbiology and Immunology, Medical University of South Carolina, Charleston
are responsible for over two million illnesses and over 100,000 deaths per year.
iMedical Equipment and Service is now offering these “copper bed” upgrades to
hospitals with Hill Rom and Stryker hospital beds and the process requires switching
out bed rails and not buying a new hospital bed. The new “Copper Bed” upgrade
involves sending bed rails for 10 beds, switching them out and then taking the 10
hospital bed rails and having them coated with the copper and sent back in. This
process allows hospitals to upgrade the bed rails and not have to buy all new hospital
beds. These hospital bed rails have been shown to reduce “HAI’s” (hospital aquired
infections) by 80% or more and will be a key instrument for hospitals to reduce
bacteria counts and infectious disease outbreaks in the future.

Copper Hospital Beds Kill Bacteria, Save Lives – Article
Nov. 8, 2019
Washington, DC – November 8, 2019 – A new study has found that copper hospital beds in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) harbored an average of 95 percent fewer bacteria than conventional hospital beds, and maintained these low-risk levels throughout patients’ stay in hospital.
The research is published this week in Applied and Environmental Microbiology, a journal of the American Society for Microbiology.
